LOCAL NEWSFLASH!!! and more information...
University groups from Michigan and Boston are visiting Orinoco again
A nice group of amazing students from State University of Michigan are visiting Orinco and Hostal Garifuna in middle of July. They are visiting us little bit more than week, making their field studies of different disciplines. Some of them are sosiologists, some biologists and some antropologists. Among them are some doctoral students, preparing their Phd -thesis in Orinoco. This means that Hostal Garifuna is full during that period, but from Orinoco village you can still find a comfortable lodging facilities.
In August we are waiting for a small group of students and professors of University of Harvard. Our friends from Boston have been visited Us frecuently and this is the third time we have a opportunity to give them a best service we could. It is great to see you folks again!!
GSM -telephone is working again in Orinoco
The problems with telephone connections are over. Telephones in our community work normally again. Feel free to contact us when you want by phone, email or facebook. Check out Contact us-pages.
Good news and bad news with mobile telephone connections
First the good news: Orinoco is finally recieving its GSM -tower. This means, that the black-outs of telephone connections will be history. Another good point is, that the mobile Internet connection will be available in Orinoco soon. People from Enitel (telephone company) told that construction of the tower will be ready in July-August. We are anxiosly waiting for that.
Then the bad news: Orinoco telephone connections have been out of use about a week, now. This is caused partly becouse of bad weather and propably by antenna construction works. We don't know when this black-out will be finished, hopefully very soon. If you need to contact us, please use e-mail or FaceBook...;)
Fire in the hotelroom was rapidly extinguished
In one of the rooms of Hostal Garifuna there was an accidental fire early in Wednesday morning 7.of July. The fire was rapidly extinguished and the damage was limited to the furniture of the Taspabouni -room. Fortunately, nobody was inside the room during the incident and nobody got hurt or injured in fire fighting activity. This was the most important thing. The reason of the fire is still unclear, but it was external and police is investigating incident.
What makes us feel very happy is the fact that the great people of Orinoco helped us very much to repaint rooms and repair damages and clean the mess. Very many thanks and big hugs for all of them. Room is already in use and even better than before.
What we learned about incident: from now on every room will have a smoke and heat detector and the amount of fire extinguishers will be doubled. Material of new beds will be tested against fire. In the night time no outsider is allowed to enter to the hotel yard and a night guard will be very clearly addressed to follow this rule. Overall, we have always taken very seriously to guarantee security of our clients and staff and from now on this is our number one issue in everything.
Some reckless people spread a rumor (in email messages and telephone), that Hostal Garifuna was "burnt down". We are more than happy to inform you, that this rumor couldn't be more false: We are working hard and making our hotel more secure and more comfortable than ever. Welcome to visit in our improved and more secure hotel!!
RESTAURANT AND BAR WARUGUMA OPENED IN PUEBLO NUEVO
Pueblo Nuevo is a mestizo community inside the wawashan natural reserve. By the iniciative of three garifuna ladies: Aneli Morales, Karlene Vesasquez and Kensy Sambola there is a new quality restaurant in that community of 8 500 people.
The restaurant is on the way to Kakha Creek natural reserve, just in front of the baseball field of Pueblo Nuevo village (look spend the night in the jungle-page) so for visitors it is a good place to rest and refresh and have a meal during the trip. Waruguma - which means a star in garifuna language- is a clean and safe restaurant with tasty caribbean food; it is really a place worth of visit.
UNIVERSITY VISITS IN ORINOCO
Many university groups have visited us lately: In March the 14 persons group of students from Michigan State University, leading by assistent professor Gerald Urquhart gave us a visit. Group consisted both Phd -level students, who made their investigation works in Pearl Lagoon area and batchelor-level students, who were making their social work section and project works. Michigan students visaited in schools of orinoco and Pueblo Nuevo and donated a complete set of baseball implements for both villages. Michigan students also helped us in reforestation efforts by planting pine trees in Terve -Waruguma farm near the Hill Creek reforestation project. We do appreciate a lot this kind of iniciatives. Thank You!
In May the 22-students group from University of New Mexico will visit us again - they were here a year ago, and enjoyed their visit! The aim of the visit is to get know the social structure of Orinoco and Pueblo Nuevo communities and visit in the natural reserve Kakha Creek -and spend a night there. According to the videos of Michigan universitaries: there can be expected some expectacular wildlife - specially in nighttime.
THE BEST TIME IN THE YEAR TO SEE BURN WATER PHENOMENOM
Right now it is a best time to observe the spectacular phenomenom of BURN WATER in Wawashan river. In the pitch black night, when the panga or boat moves in the river, all the splashes will turn to be light sources. This strange vision is caused by microscopical animals and algas, which by the agitation of boat and motor to the water, emits bright green and even light blue light. The nature provided light is so strong that it wins easily normal flashlight in its power. Burn Water is something really special and worth of seeing. But if you want to see Burn Water (as the local people call it) you must hurry: it will vanish for 6 months soon by the start of rainy season in May.
